Bell - Magic Tape

Try waking up in the morning to this one. Bell is a three piece electronic facepunch delivered chiefly by the enigmatic Olga Bell, hailing from Brooklyn by way of Alaska by way of Moscow. Their new single, "Magic Tape" shows off her stream of conscious style melody lines (resembling Bjork's) riding over a muted glitchbeat in the beginning before exploding into a chorus with syncopated bass lines booming over a bolder aria. "Echinacea" is another one to check out. They've only released 6 songs so far, pretty bangin' intro to the scene though. You can buy their digital EP here.

Hiromi - amazing pianist from Japan

Last night I had the great opportunity to see Hiromi Uehara, an incredible Jazz Pianist from Japan. Her style is unique in that she alters the sound of the piano strings to make them sound like she's playing a stand up bass or one of those clangly western-sounding pianos (yeah i have no idea about terminology). But either way, she is SUPER fast and she is incredibly passionate. You can see the passion flow through her face and body when she plays. You can hear her sincerity when she talks to the audience between songs and thanks everyone for a night of sharing emotions. Her talent is unquestionable. Just watch the video above.

The Synthetic City - Chris Lineberry

Originally from Greensboro, NC, Chris Lineberry crafts his art pieces together using MS Paint and Pinnacle Studio. What surprised me the most is the range of talent this 18 year old has! I love the musical selections he chooses for these exploding song-operetta narrations like Arcade Fire, Caribou, Octopus Project, Of Montreal, Animal Collective, Architecture in Helsinki, Jon Brion and The Go! Team. Check out his latest work "The Synthetic City", something new and different by combining photography into the mix, varying from his usual style of transforanimation, digitizing and manipulating color like in the video "Spork in the Road"...refer to video below.

"The Synesthetic City" This stop-motion heart-stopper is the story of 4 characters who meet in a city, reached through the hallucinations of synesthesia. However, their good time is soon interrupted by a 5th. Three of the characters are based on "Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends", about superheroes who go to college and decide to fight crime together, one of which is a synesthete who exists in the city via a headset. The 4th character is a transient go-go dancer, whose present destination happens to be this Synesthetic City. The intersection of these characters' stories is met with jealousy and anger by Cornea, the bully who turns into a villain. Featuring a Go!Team cover of Sonic Youth's "Bull in the Heather", "October is Eternal" by Of Montreal, and "Ghosts of Things to Come", a score by Clint Mansell performed by The Kronos Quartet. This video was created for the North Carolina senior project, required by Weaver Academy for graduation. Synopsis by Chris Lineberry

"Spork in the Road" (Caribou - " Zoe") was posted up in March of last year.

Passions - Emergency Animation 'n Tracks

Here's a fun animation to zone off into. Definitely a good one for the projector screen, except for that low quality feature...bah.

Passions [not to be confused with the UK post-punk band The Passions] is on the French Kitsune label with labelmates like : Hot Chip, Fischerspooner, Digitalism, Crystal Castles, Yelle, Simian Mobile Disco. Kitsune in Japanese means fox! Krafty.

This single was released in the spring of 2007, but only recently did I find this video. Passions (hailing from Brooklyn) haven't come out with much as of late, but a few demos and remixes of other labelmates/unsigned artists songs.

This is by far one of my fav electro labels aside from the Ed Banger Record label.

Take this gem with you - Emergency (Radio Edit)

and see some remix love too - Homewreckers (Passions Remix)

The Attack of The Clones: Yung L.A. vs J-Money

It is my pleasure to announce The Attack of The Clones: Yung L.A. vs J-Money mixed by DJ DiBiAse. For those of you who know the "Dee-bee-aah-cee", know that he's always had a strong appreciation for local music, indie to hood, so this mixtape only made sense!

DJ DiBiase aka Alex Bowden, originally hails from Plainfield, NJ; these days he reps the Atlanta, GA music scene hard. Mixtapes were a regular agenda for the beat matching natural with his high school alias DJ Tomahawk - - which grew into several local radio gigs (i heart radio!) sculpting his style in the world of turntablism. DJ DiBiase's got a lot going for his career in ATL's mixing scene opening up for artist like Diplo, making guest spots on Siruis Satelitte Radio and of course getting down at the clubs. Make sure to visit the Myspace for more downloadable mixtapes.

Yung L.A. and J-Money (1st name, last name) are two of the biggest artist in the streets of Atlanta. But they share a very similar....swag, futuristic swag that is. Rock the mix.

Sup dawg, I heard you like webstreaming college radio

So I don't know if I mentioned this at all (I'm pretty sure I didn't), but I have a math rock radio show for our college radio station.

Mondays and Wednesdays from 11 AM - 12 PM is the more accessible hour, for those trying to get into the genre or just wanting to listen to something melodic, yet rhythmically complex. For example, these guys get a lot of play during this time:

Saturdays from 9 PM - 11 PM is the more ridiculous, bizarre, skronky, angular musics that I've come to love. Here's a good example:

The latter of which are a friend of mine's band in Alabama!

So yeah, check it out here.

Everybody Loves Pretty Lights

The outstanding producing and arranging of Colorado’s own Dereck Smith, accompanied by the live drummer Cory Eberhard, has created a dirty, dance, two-step, dub focused musical odyssey. Their latest album ‘Filling up the City Skies’ takes listeners on a raw, energetic, journey through time itself. Using a mix of dirty yet beautiful oldschool samples mixed with new age synthesis, all put to the backdrop of grimy break beats, Pretty Lights has the ability to fuel the dance floor with energy and pull tears straight from your soul at the same time.

I would recommend Pretty Lights to any fan of electronica, hip-hop, downtempo, or dub sound, it’s all in there and it’s all good.

The greatest part about Pretty Lights, is that all of their albums are 100% free. Just go on out to http://www.prettylightsmusic.com/ and download both their albums. That’s roughly three hours of nonstop brilliance to melt your mind.

Science creates the worse song ever

And by worst, I mean best.

Opera rap, children's choruses yelling about oppression, Wal-Mart and George Stephanopoulos, and everything else you could never want in a song. It's hysterical.

It was inspired by a poll conducted in the 90's about elements of music that people found least appealing; harp glissandos, political jingoism, spaghetti westerns, oompah bands, etc.
By dropping each of these elements into a blender-of-fucking-awesome, they have created something so bizarre and unpalatable that it's actually an interesting listen. My favorite moment is probably the 20 seconds of weird music followed by 5 seconds of incredibly loud cacophony, followed by a bunch more weird music. You'll know it when you hear it.

If you get really annoyed, I went ahead and mapped out the highlights:
1:23-2:22, 4:07-5:07, 5:43-6:23, 8:35- 9:35, 10:10- 10:48, 12:43-15:30, 17:51-end.

They also created the "best music ever" from the same poll, and I wanted to hurt myself over how bad it was.

Making Some Improvements!

making some layout changes....it's techtastic!

Feed the Horse - Fagget Fairys

Here’s the music video for “Feed the Horse” from Danish band Fagget Fairys. The Copenhagen based lesbian ghetto-funk, pop-slamming MC/DJ duo Fagget Fairys met on the dance floor about a year ago and well….it was quite magical…cause soon after they met up, the creative duo started dating (oh man!), moved in together and got engaged. The delish Danish ladies behind the music are currently on the Music For Dreams label. This video was produced and made by the innovative directorship of Miss. astrup aka. Sigrid Asrup, bringing us that sexy HD quality that we all love. She also edited, chorerographed and made the costumes! For more work by this director visit workandvideo.com and sigridastrup.com

Here's the Feed the Horse (Hand Clap Remix) - Fagget Fairys , enjoy!

Merrill Garbus = Tune-Yards

Something reminded me today of a wonderful little lady that I hadn't listened to in a while.

Merrill Garbus is the woman behind Tune-Yards and writes and plays lush little ditties all by her lonesome. She shreds on a ukelele backed by either looped drums or looped mouth-beatz and the results are both surprisingly haunting and peaceful.

Here she is playing Little Tiger:

One thing I really love about her is the strange, almost reed-like quality of her voice. If she were embodied as an instrument, she would be like a well-played oboe, but I can see reasons why some wouldn't like it.

She also composed her own one-man sock-puppet opera called "The Fat Kid Opera". Here's a sample. I would really like to find more, however, this is the only one I could find.

I'm still kind of new at this blog format, so I don't know where the link ends up, but check out her myspace and, by extension, the link to the page to buy her album. It's well worth it, considering she's operating on an In Rainbows platform in that you can pay whatever you want.

-----edit-----
I'm an idiot and I have figured out where the link went. Needless to say, it was in the wrong spot. Here is her actual myspace: Tune-Yards!
---end edit---

Even though all of the songs are awesome, my favorites would definitely have to be FIYA and Hatari, for the sheer fact that the latter has a clipped beat. When you listen to it, you'll understand what I'm saying.

Inagural post for dy/dx

Hello all, this is dy/dx, the newest addition to ninjatronics.

To kickstart this whole thing, here's a video of one of my favorite musicians, Victor Villareal (Cap'n Jazz, Ghosts and Vodka, Owls, Noyes), performing a song from his new album Memories Alive, to be released on the 10th! I'm really excited!

Though this doesn't show it much, the man is a guitar god. Check out his work in any of the other bands mentioned and you'll hear it.

Also, here is a lovely video set to the tune of Kickball's 'Sauvie Island' from the album Huckleberry Eater.

Let this be the first post in a beautiful bloglationship!
